A chilling description of the accident was written on the back of the photo by photographer Arhur B. Johnson. "Frisco 4-8-2 #4404 pulling the "Bluebonnet' #8, Oct 5, 1947 about 4:30am running a little late in heavy fog. Engineer became lost due to fog and didn't know he was on the Nichols curve, which he hit at 60 or more, when it should have been 30 mph. Engine flipped, killing fireman. No passengers hurt. Engine rebuilt & returned to service Dec, 1947." |

Great looking 4-8-2 mountain type steam loco was built in 1939 by the Frisco's own shop rebuilds rebuilds reusing all parts of earlier 2-10-2s above the running gear. #4400-4412 (oil burners) pulled both freight and passenger trains Specs -serial #49412 class 4400, 70" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 29x32" cylinders, engine weight of 449,760 lb, tractive effort of 68,626 lb. The final disposition is currently unknown - please leave a comment if you know what happened to this fine looking locomotive. This is an Arthur B. Johnson photo. |
